  • Apple Now Allows Users to Tip with In-App Purchases

Apple removed the app, and several others Lin highlighted, after his post went viral, but the App Store is still rife with shady apps that use subscriptions and misleading descriptions to trick people into spending lots of money on junk apps. Lin, in the blog, wrote, "I scrolled down the list in the Productivity category and saw apps from well-known companies like Dropbox, Evernote, and Microsoft". The updated App Store rules reveal the hard restrictions led by Apple on the appearance of app review prompts and the number of time the users sees them.

In its App Store Review Guidelines, Apple said: "Apps may use in-app purchase currencies to enable customers to "tip" digital content providers in the app. Apps may not include buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms other than in-app purchase". Until Apple removes these scam apps and improves its app review policies, spread the word to make sure family and friends don't get ripped off! Apple takes a 30% cut on every purchase, from the App Store or in-app. The App Store estimates Mobile Protection was downloaded some 50,000 times in April alone.

Note that streaming apps like Periscope and Facebook Live announced it started testing ad breaks that interrupt on-demand video as potential revenue for content creators. He looked up the app on Sensor Tower, a website providing data and insights into mobile apps, and found the suspicious app was earning a monthly revenue of $80,000.

Upon launching the app, it forces you to commit to either a free trial or a weekly app subscription before you can scan anything.

Gruber argued that Apple needs to reassess "the effects of allowing developers to buy their way to the top spot in search results".

Storm Calvin forms off Mexico's Pacific coast, heads for land
A tropical storm warning was in effect for Mexico's Pacific coast between Punta Maldonado and Boca de Pijijiapan. These rainfall totals could lead to life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in some areas into midweek.

The app review prompts will no more annoy the users as Apple have come up with a solution. They're taking advantage of the fact that there's no filtering or approval process for ads, and that ads look nearly indistinguishable from real results, and some ads take up the entire search result's first page.

iOS: If you've never checked on your app subscriptions, I don't blame you.

Apple didn't respond to Mashable's request for comment on app subscriptions or whether those who had unwittingly paid exorbitant amounts for app subscriptions would get refunds.

The app exposes several problems with the App Store now.
