Japan's Hyuga-class helicopter carrier and JDS Ashigara, an Atago-class guided missile destroyer, are taking part alongside aircraft including US F/A18 Hornet multirole fighter jets and Japanese F15 fighters, the Japanese naval command said.

"It's the first time we have exercised with two carriers", said a Japanese military spokesman.

In all, 12 warships and two carrier air wings operated together in the Sea of Japan on Thursday.

Joint exercises involving US aircraft carriers and the MSDF previously were not conducted in the Sea of Japan out of consideration for neighboring nations. "It's a major exercise for us", a spokesperson for Japan's Self Defense Force - the name used by Japan for its military - told the Reuters news agency.

Amid repeated military provocations by North Korea, the USA made the unusual decision to dispatch two aircraft carriers to the Sea of Japan this week, while also announcing that it successfully carried out a missile-intercept test.

In a post on its Facebook page, the USA 7th Fleet described the drills as "routine training".

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed to take joint action with the USA against North Korea, following Monday's missile test.

The joint Japan-U.S. exercise was unprecedented in size.

The United States has led the efforts to bring further sanctions to punish the North and is urging China, Pyongyang's main sponsor, to play a greater role in applying pressure on the unpredictable regime of Kim Jong-un. However, "Launching an intercontinental ballistic missile or conducting a sixth nuclear test" are red lines, according to a source well-informed about Japan-U.S. military matters.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed to work with the United States to "take specific action to deter North Korea".

Experts believe that the country may also have constructed as many as 130 missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead - but North Korea is believed to need about three more years before developing a warhead compact enough to be mounted on a missile. North Korea also possesses numerous submarines, meaning an unintentional maritime clash is not out of the question.
