Official says Trump expected to pull U.S. from Paris client deal

02 June, 2017, 01:58 | Author: Caleb Marshall

The Republican vowed at the time to "cancel" the Paris deal within 100 days of becoming president on January 20, part of an effort to bolster us oil and coal industries. Rising sea levels, more powerful storms, disruptions to agriculture and spread of tropical diseases are all expected consequences of increased global temperatures.

What about the rest of the world?

Without mentioning the USA specifically, Li said that "China in recent years has stayed true to its commitment" and pointed out that his was one of the first countries to ratify the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement was in part brokered by Obama and was seen as a major breakthrough after the previous accord, the Kyoto protocol, failed to include the United States and China, the world's two biggest polluters.

Economists also warn that climate change could inflict a devastating impact on the global economy.

"It was a significant move forward. the fact that there's just so much agreement and good will on all parts, including some nations that had been (reluctant) in the past", Professor Ian Simmonds of Sydney University's School of Earth Sciences told CNN. Under the accord, participating nations agreed to voluntarily reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change.

Some executives from coal companies have weighed in, arguing the USA should stay in with reduced emissions cuts targets, with an eye toward ensuring that Washington keeps some influence over the future of the global energy mix. Eurostat, the record-keeping arm of the European Union, reported a preliminary bloc-wide estimate for carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels declined 0.4 percent compared with past year.

During a trip to Europe this week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed India's commitment to fighting climate change and said it would be a "crime" to spoil the environment for future generations.

US Forces raid kills 7 al-Qaeda fighters in Yemen
Seven al-Qaeda militants were killed, Tuesday, during the raid of an al-Qaeda compound by US Special forces in Yemen. The Marib raid is the second publicly-known USA ground deployment in Yemen this year against al-Qaida militants.

But some scientists have pointed out even with the agreement in place, halting global warming at two degrees might be unattainable.

What impact would a United States withdrawal have?

Many economists have big doubts.

The European Union and China indicated they would press ahead with the deal, regardless of USA participation.

"But of course, we also hope to do this in cooperation with others", added Li.

However, not all experts agree it will be disastrous for efforts to reach global climate goals. To pull out of Paris but keep the United States involved in the broader UNFCCC process would take more than three years, but withdrawing from the entire framework would be easier-though the backlash for doing so could be even stronger.Global leaders began reacting to the reports of Trump's plans.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also warned Trump against exiting the Paris climate change deal - a treaty ratified by the United States a year ago - in a speech Wednesday, declaring: "The law is the law, and everyone must adhere to it".
