Hackers have reportedly stolen the new Pirates of the Caribbean film

16 May, 2017, 09:32 | Author: Caleb Marshall

Disney is in crisis mode with claims hackers have stolen an unreleased film and are threatening to leak it unless the company pays up.

According to the CEO, the perpetrators of the crime informed Disney that they would release the first five minutes of the film and continue to leak 20-minute chunks until the ransom is paid.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is scheduled to arrive on May 26th but Disney may be forced to release the film earlier or face a potential box office blow. Unsurprisingly Disney has no interest in dealing or giving in to the hackers and according to Iger, the company has no plans to pay them and are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to sort it out.

The studio made the disclosure while a global WannaCry ransomware cyberattack is happening globally.

Thieves and hackers and ransoms, oh my.

Potential For Severe Storms Tuesday, in Nebraska and Kansas
Moisture is returning and heat is building in advance of this two-part storm system shown below (valid Wednesday ). Overnight lows are expected to drop off into the upper 50s, leading into Mother's Day.

It's not the first time a film or series has been held to ransom. However, an online chatter tipped that the rumor was a hoax. The online video streaming company refused to pay the ransom demanded by the cyber criminals.

The theft comes a few weeks after hackers stole the latest season of Netflix's "Orange is the New Black".

The hacker, who goes by the handle "thedarkoverlord", has also threatened to post unreleased TV episodes from other networks. Oh what fun we're all going to have. "At least a half-dozen extortion attempts" against Hollywood firms have occurred in the last six months, according to a report last week by The Hollywood Reporter, citing unnamed sources.

Disney bosses have reportedly called in the FBI to investigate a major cyber hack.
