'Sean Spicer' returns to 'SNL' with Melissa McCarthy back at the podium

This weekend's Saturday Night Live had plenty of material to work with. After he spent several minutes Tuesday night hiding in the bushes from reporters following President Donald Trump's firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, White House rumors suggested Trump might be about to ax his top comms chief.

Most of the press corps' questions focused on the big news of the week: Comey and the FBI investigation into ties between Russian Federation and Trump campaign associates.

When we heard that Melissa McCarthy would be hosting one of the last Saturday Night Live episodes of the season, we knew two things: it would involve her impression of Sean Spicer, and it would be really, really amusing. Michael Che sat in as Lester Holt to lampoon Trump's NBC Nightly News interview from earlier this week, and the cold open mainly just functioned as a way for SNL to repeat things Trump actually said in that interview.

"Only since you started working here", "Trump" promises.

In real life, Sanders was forced to field questions about the press secretary's role as Trump threatened to cancel all press briefings - and SNL jumped into that debate head first. Inside Putin ("Oops", McCarthy says, swiftly tossing that doll aside), follows "Steve Bannon", or Slimer from Ghostbusters. Finally finding the president, Spicer got a kiss from Trump.

President Trump would think that by placing a young woman on the other side of the toughest newsroom in the free world, the situation for him would become easier.

Flynn could reasonably face criminal charges and if found guilty, there would be a basis to lock him up. Now, why was Yates surprised? "She was the acting attorney general that he kept on".

McCarthy, as Spicer, proceeds to take control of the briefing, announcing "Spicey's back!"

While I didn't love the skit's treatment of mental health (The "he's crazy" jokes aren't amusing!), I'll never get exhausted of McCarthy's fantastic physical comedy. "I promise I'll talk better!"

Not to hyperbolize but this might have been the most important SNL sketch of Sean Spicer's career, what with a rumor circulating that President Trump is considering replacing him with a Fox News personality.

Spicer cranked up his motorized podium and hit the road for NY to confront Trump and find out. "I'm famous, it's OK".

Melissa McCarthy was hosting Saturday Night Live for the fifth time in her career - a coveted milestone only achieved by those most highly thought of by the show's producers.

"Is this like The Godfather where you kiss me and on one ever sees me again?"
