It did not give any details about the missile nor the type of platform from which it was launched.

An editorial from the government controlled Global Times stated the missile launch "killed two birds with one stone".

"The missile might be launched from the northwest to the east by the Rocket Force, with a range of 2,000 km or above", Liang said.

He also said: "The warhead possibly featured an electromagnetic pulse that could destroy a carrier's command system".

China has reportedly tested a new missile in an area near the Korean peninsula.

Recently renovated by Jack Nicklaus in 2006, the Scarlet Course is playing as long as 6,416 yards this week, a par 72. The super regional continues Tuesday with the Vikings scheduled to start teeing off at 8:20 am.

The announcement came as South Koreans elected left-leaning former human rights lawyer Moon Jae-In in a presidential election held after a scandal led to the impeachment of the country's previous leader.

Last week, US Forces Korea said THAAD was now operational, with the ability to intercept North Korean missiles, prompting Beijing to demand the immediate suspension of the system's deployment.

While no other country has claims in the busy Bohai Sea, the drills come amid heightened tension on the Korean peninsula, including Chinese anger at the deployment of the US anti-missile defence system THAAD in South Korea last month.

The US said the THAAD deployment was aimed at countering any missile attack by North Korea against the South, Japan and the US.

In retaliation against Seoul, Beijing has stopped travel agencies from sending groups to South Korea, among other measures. Moon's parents were refugees from the North and his election could perhaps strain relations with the USA, with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson each calling for a tougher line against the North and leader Kim Jong Un.

China has over the years tried to coax North Korea into cautious, export-oriented economic reforms, rather than sabre rattling and nuclear tests, but to little avail.

"China had better ponder over the grave consequences to be entailed by its reckless act of chopping down the pillar of the DPRK-China relations", KCNA said in a commentary.
