Ford Hit With $295 Million Recall Charge

  • Ford Transit Connect

Separately, the expanded recall covers 210,619 vehicles to fix a tab in the side door latch that could break, potentially causing the door to swing open while driving. Engines can overheat when coolants don't circulate properly, resulting in a crack in the cylinder head that allows oil to leak onto hot engine surfaces, the Dearborn-based automaker said.

Ford on Wednesday also issued a much larger recall to fix a potential coolant link that can cause a fire in multiple vehicles, including the Escape crossover and Transit Connect van. Customers can drive their vehicles, but should go to a dealer if there are issues with its coolant.

The engine fire recall covers over 360,000 vehicles in North America and Europe. So far, Ford is aware of 29 reports of engine fires. This may reduce the vehicle's structural integrity in a side-impact collision, Ford said.

Ford will mail customers instructions on how to check and refill the coolant.

If parts are available, dealers will install a coolant level sensor and a warning light on the dashboard telling owners if the coolant level is low, Weigandt said.

The nine winners of each European group will qualify for the World Cup, while the eight best runners-up will advance to the play-offs.

The company is also expanding a previous recall on faulty door latches to include an additional 211,000 cars.

The recall includes 2014 Escape vehicles made at Louisville Assembly Plant from February 12, 2013 to September 2, 2014, according to Ford.

Auto industry giant Ford has issued safety recalls for almost half a million vehicles. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in 2015 it had 1,102 reports related to the problem and Ford said it had 10,883 warranty claims related to door latch failures. Ford recalled the 2013 Escape two more times for fuel lines on the 1.6-liter engine that could split and leak gasoline.

Past year door latch recalls cost the company $640 million. Ford said it had not recorded any crashes or injuries connected to the defect.

The cost of the latest recall is included in Ford's most recent earnings guidance, the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
