Germany owes 'vast sums' to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

The White House meeting, one of Trump's first with a foreign leader since his inauguration, is a recognition on both sides of the importance of U.S.

On Tuesday, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, will travel to Washington for her first visit with the USA president, Donald Trump, in what is being described as a meeting of intractable symbolism.

"Why are you so scared of diversity in the news?" one reporter asked Trump, also questing his isolationist worldview.

Donald Trump has said Germany owes vast sums of money to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the United States must be paid more for providing defence.

Last night, Schiff pointed out that Trump has very little in common with Angela Merkel, who "has courage to confront Russian Federation & champion human rights", something Trump has failed to do, being too busy complimenting Vladimir Putin on his "strength" as a leader.

Only the U.S. and four other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members - including the United Kingdom - now reach the alliance's benchmark of spending on defence which is 2% of GDP. The US, on the other hand, contributes 3.6% - nearly double the requirement.

The new president reaffirmed the United States' "strong support" for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, but reiterated his stance that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies need to "pay their fair share" for the cost of defence. Trump did thank Merkel for Germany's recent commitments to increase defense spending.

Merkel maintained her composure when Trump repeated his contention that former President Barack Obama may have tapped his phones in Trump Tower.

And hey, however bad it was, it still wasn't the most awkward interaction between Merkel and a US president. During his election campaign, Trump had frequently attacked Merkel for "ruining" Germany by allowing refugees and migrants from Syria to enter the country.

Minnesota Vikings sign DE Datone Jones
NFL Media reported he got a one-year, $3.75 million deal, although it could be worth as much as $5 million with incentives. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Vikings are visiting with Packers defensive end Datone Jones on Monday.

Mr Trump said Mr Spicer was merely quoting a Fox News analyst when he made the comments.

Trump expressed appreciation for Merkel's assurance that Germany is committed to increasing its military spending.

"Our two nations share much in common, including our desire for prosperity, security, and peace", Trump said.

The two clashed on trade on Friday.

The U.S. had a trade deficit of $68 billion with Germany in 2016 - the second-largest deficit America has after China. Trump backed Britain's departure from the European Union and has expressed skepticism of multilateral trade agreements.

Both German journalists asked about it point-blank.

"I don't know what newspaper you're reading but I guess that would be another example of 'fake news!'".

But look out, this lady is also as close to an Iron Chancellor as any German leader since Bismarck two centuries ago.

Merkel is "really the opposite" of Trump, German Institute for global and Security Affairs Senior Fellow Susanne Dröge told NBC ahead of the meeting. "On the other hand, when expectations are low sometimes that can set the stage for improvement".
