Attackers wielding axes injured five people at the main train station in the west German city of Duesseldorf late Thursday, local police told AFP.

Police are investigating whether other people were involved in the attack.

Regional police said on Twitter that Dusseldorf's station is now closed due to a "comprehensive" police response there.

Counter-terrorism police were called to the scene and are believed to have arrested two suspects, while the station was closed and paramedics tended to those injured at the scene.

Photos on social media show a person lying on the floor as police tape and officers cordon off part of the stations.

The man arrested was also injured, spokeswoman for Dusseldorf police Anja Kynast said.

He added: "Stay away from #Dusseldorf train station insane man with #axe on the lose".
