Liverpool v Portsmouth

This evening Portsmouth will be making the long journey to Anfield to take on Liverpool in this Barclays Premier League fixture. With both teams in desperate need of the points this match should see some attacking football as a draw is no good for either team. The last time these two teams met in the Premier League was last December where Portsmouth took all three points with a two nil victory, courtesy of goals from Belhadj and Piquionne.

Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League with 48 points. They are four points behind Spurs who are sitting fourth in the all-important Champions League position. Liverpool are struggling to find any kind of form and it appears that Rafael Benitez’s position has become under threat. In their last Premier League game they failed to beat Wigan, losing one nil with a single goal coming from Rodallega. Liverpool’s last match was a Europa league match against Lille. They lost this one nil but Benitez has insisted that it was an improvement on the performance at Wigan and that they will get the much needed result in the second leg at Anfield.

Portsmouth are still struggling on and off the pitch. They are currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table with just 19 points. After falling into administration it is only a matter of time before they are docked points and all hope of avoiding relegation will be extinguished. In their last Premier League game they were at home to Birmingham. Birmingham were two goals ahead thanks to Jerome, until the final minute when Kanu got a consolation goal. The only good news for Pompey fans is their success in the FA Cup. If they make the final it will be the second time in three years.
